120 Creative Ways To Give Gift Cards and Money
It's a fact: at Christmas, you MUST give gift cards. Everyone on your list is asking for gift cards or money for gifts.
And you know this: Handing over a boring greeting card with a few cash bills or a basic gift card inside is the worst.
It's all over in 2 seconds, even if you gave them $1000.
Unless you find a clever and creative way to give gift cards or money.
This collection of 120 ideas is full of fun, creative, and laugh-out-loud hilarious ways to give money or gift cards as gifts!
Just imagine:
- Your friends and family looking forward to getting gift cards from you each year
- The fun everyone will have watching the recipient unwrap your unique and clever gift wrapping
- Giving gift cards becoming fun and exciting for you too!
You'll leave this post with at least a handful of ideas to give gift cards without being boring, basic, or unremarkable.
Why Giving Gift Cards or Cash Gifts is So Hard
Why does giving cash or gift cards have to be so difficult?
Grandma gave us money in a greeting card in an envelope. If you wrap a gift card or money in an envelope, the recipient knows what to expect. There's no excitement because they already know what is inside.
No matter the amount of cash or the amount on the gift card, the recipient has the same experience when opening the gift.
Gift cards and money gifts are expensive. Few ways exist to save money on them, and some gift cards cost more than their face value or worth.
Luckily, in this article, I am sharing 120 ways to gift money or gift cards that are:
- unexpected
- anything but basic
- better than Grandma could imagine
- have a built-in hunt factor in finding all the supplies to wrap the gift
- create an experience for the giver, the recipient, and everyone watching
Why Do People Want Money or Gift Cards as a Gifts? 4 Benefits
The most requested gifts are money and gift cards, with 54% of US consumers buying gift cards as gifts, according to a report by CapitalOne.
1. Cash and Gift Cards are Convenient Gifts
Cash is just an ATM away. According to the Wall Street Journal, there are over 450,000 ATMs in the United States. A quick search in your phone's maps app will generate a list of ATMs located nearest you.
Gift cards are available for purchase nearly everywhere, making them incredibly convenient gifts. Here's where to get gift cards:
- Online or in-store directly from the retailer
- Online or in-store from retailers that sell gift cards for multiple brands or retailers, like Amazon, most grocery stores, or big box stores like Target, Lowe's, and Best Buy
- Redeeming points from credit cards to purchase or earn gift cards
If you need a last-minute gift, you can stop in a grocery store or gas station and likely buy a gift card or ask for cash back on your purchase and instantly have your gift in hand.
2. Giving Gift Cards Can Cleverly Create a Memorable Experience
Gift cards create an experience when given in a clever way.
According to Nerd Wallet's “2023 Holiday Shopping Report” , 36% of consumers say they want to have experience rather than exchanging gifts.
3. The Easy Gift For Someone on Your List Who Is Hard to Buy For
Gift cards or cash gifts allow the recipient to buy what they want or invest the money in a way that fits their goals and values.
4. Skip The Trash of Unwanted Gifts and Opt for Money
Cash gifts and gift cards are more eco-friendly than buying gifts the recipient doesn't want, preventing shipping waste and discarded gift wrap from unwanted gifts they'll end up returning or re-gifting.

Ever year I have given my grandson birthday money[he ‘s 18 this year] . Its been fun coming up with creative forms. Always is entertaining for all. Thank you for new ideas. Ready to start this tradition with four year old granddaughter
I’d love to know which idea you chose and how it went over – please come back and let us know what happened 🙂
Thanks for share Biggest Information
I asked my in-laws what we could get my grandmother-in-law for Christmas and the reply was cash. I feel a little uneasy with that just because grandparents usually give grandchildren money and I don’t want to make her feel uncomfortable. She has also had some struggle with accepting her age and the shift of having to be parented by her children (i.e, no longer safe for her to drive herself, personal hygiene issues)… Anyways, what is a fun or heartfelt way to give cash to a grandparent??
I can see how you might see that situation from that perspective … it is super thoughtful. Can you think of something that is really special to her and hide the cash inside of that presentation? Like maybe she LOVES tea so you take a tea tin and put cash inside … think about something she loves and would make her know you made some thoughtful effort and wrap it in that or present the cash in that way.
Will you let us know what you decide to do and what happened?
wow, it’s very creative way to gift. Thanks for sharing.
