Last month while we were in San Diego, my husband Xaver and one of our friends met up at a local brewery to pick up a few growlers of locally brewed beer. Xaver's had the beer sitting in the fridge for a month now and with it being October, I knew it was the perfect time to start sampling the beers he chose. I know the perfect meal for sampling Xaver's beers: Winter Polska Kielbasa Stew made with Hillshire Farm® Polska Kielbasa.  With Oktoberfest around the corner, fall is here and the crisp air makes my family yearn for hearty dishes like this one. This stew goes great with beer for the adults and apple cider for the kids and makes a great easy one-pot dinner. The leftovers heat up well for lunch the next day!

kielbasa stew

Oktoberfest is a traditional autumn festival held in Munich, Germany, every October that features beer-drinking, merrymaking, and lots of sausage. Everyone celebrates Oktoberfest with fun, food, and family to welcome in fall and to, well, drink beer. A few years ago, we met up with friends at an Oktoberfest celebration at the Pomona Fairgrounds and had a blast! I think Xaver still has the collectible beer mug from that trip somewhere around here. Xaver participated in a beer drinking contest, we played carnival games and danced around, we ate sausages and more sausages, and had a blast with our friends. The only bummer for me what that we couldn't include our kids. There's no reason why you can't celebrate Oktoberfest at home and have a small (or big) celebration of your own with good food, friends, and fun.

I love that this is a simple one-pot dish which makes clean up super easy. You can use any combination of root vegetables, squash, and frozen vegetables to customize this dish to your liking but the main component that gives it a creamy consistency are the potatoes and the Polska Kielbasa. For years my family has been choosing Hillshire Farm® Polska Kielbasa when making this dish, as far as I can remember back.

We picked up all of the ingredients for this dish at our local Walmart, except for a few vegetables from my backyard garden. You can find Hillshire Farm® Polska Kielbasa in the Meats Section of any Walmart – just look for the rope shaped sausage!
