Inside: The BEST shelves and craft tables from IKEA to help you plan the craft space of your dreams on an IKEA budget! Updated with the newest IKEA products. Grab the FREE printable shopping guide with a list for each featured space. This post was originally published in 2014.

If you've been searching for smart ideas to organize your dream craft space, you're probably overwhelmed by all the options for IKEA furniture and storage solutions, right?  Which ones are the BEST? 😵‍💫

I felt like that, too, when I was working on my dream craft room. As a new mom with a new Etsy shop and going to grad school, I had no time and no money. I had to get this craft room right the first time! I bet you can relate, yeah?

I failed many times in planning my craft room. The good news is that you can skip all that pain and failure and get right to the solution.

You're in the right place to get the best answers. Let's start by looking at 16 of the best IKEA craft rooms with the most effective and affordable storage solutions. I bet these ideas will spark your organizing mojo without breaking the bank!

The Absolute Best IKEA Craft Rooms … Organized by Craft!

Now,I know that if you're reading this you're absolutely sure you're going to IKEA to build this fantastic craft room 🤣. First things first; you need to figure out what furniture will work best for the way you craft and create.

I've gathered some of the most watched and helpful YouTube videos showing craft rooms organized with IKEA furniture.

Then, I went through the IKEA catalog and matched up the furniture in each video, giving you the most up-to-date info on what current IKEA furniture pieces will help you get the look of each craft room.

Each room focuses on one craft or storage solution, so if you don't see what you're looking for immediately, keep scrolling!

And, by the way, a couple of these rooms are tours from my own IKEA craft room over the 20+ years I have had a craft y space in my home.

The One Thing You Need Before You Go to IKEA

In the multiple decades I've been crafting, IKEA has been my go-to source for craft room furniture and storage solutions.

In the years since I wrote this post, I've made many mistakes buying craft room storage and wasting loads of money on the WRONG things. Or worse, I drove an hour to IKEA and discovered they no longer had the solution I wanted. 😫

That's why I created a FREE IKEA Craft Rooms shopping list with the most up-to-date products from this year's IKEA products. You don't have to make the same mistakes I did.

Print this shopping list to take on your trip. ⬇️

1. Best Cricut Station for a Craft Room

Behind the Designs shares a gorgeous Cricut station ✂️ in her craft room using IKEA Alex Drawers to hold two Cricut machines.

a white shelving unit with a pink Cricut and a pink Cricut

While this video is a couple of years old, her craft room tour is one of my all-time favorites, featuring lots of IKEA furniture and craft organizing hacks.

Click over to her YouTube video to see the full list of all the furniture in her space and where she got it.

2. Paper Storage Using IKEA Shelves

IKEA Kallax Units are the best way to store 12″ x 12″ scrapbooking paper. 🤩 Here's why:

  • The cube openings on the shelves are 16″ x 16″ in dimension, perfect for storing paper vertically or horizontally
  • IKEA and other companies offer inserts for the Kallax units with mini shelves, which fit 12″ x 12″ paper
  • Stack extra paper on top of the sturdy shelves using the ArtBin Super Satchel 1, as I did below:
a shelf with green boxes and green bins showing paper storage

KALLAX shelves provide tons of storage space. Besides the shelves holding paper, I used magazine holders on the shelves to hold stencils, gelly plates, and other letter-sized items.

Paper IKEA boxes with lids from the office section in IKEA stores organize larger supplies like bags of lavender and hibiscus for soap making, yarn bundles, and bags of sari silk. Shallow boxes with lids hold beads, washi tape, and buttons.

I made labels for each box using a label maker like this. You could also make labels using your Cricut or another digital cutter.

3. Best Vinyl Organization System

Bethadilly shares a beautiful way to store craft vinyl and heat transfer vinyl in her craft room using IKEA Alex Drawers.

She customized her drawers with labels cut from vinyl with her Cricut machine. 💡You can also customize the drawers by painting them or using adhesive decals, like these IKEA Alex units I customized using decals from My Wonderful Walls.

4. IKEA Raskog Cart: The Best Rolling Storage and Craft Organizers

Don't you have a whole room to store your supplies?

You can organize your supplies on a small rolling RASKOG cart from IKEA! I like using the top shelf of the IKEA Raskog cart to organize items and tools vertically. ⬆️

This is perfect for tools I want to access quickly and often, like pencils, paintbrushes, scissors, and craft mats.

5. Best Craft Room for Crafting With Friends

If you ever wished to craft with your friends, you'll love this IKEA craft room idea from My Blue Bike 101.

Back in the day, when we had local scrapbook stores, I remember gathering there every Friday night and sometimes on weekends for craft nights. As a kid, I remember my grandma heading to the sewing machine store to take classes and meet other avid sewing fans.

But many local craft and scrapbook stores have closed today, and there's no place to gather and craft together. That is unless you build a craft room for crafting with friends in your house! 😍

The dream of a craft room for friends is easy to build with IKEA's inexpensive tables.

How to Make a Giant Cutting Table With IKEA Tables … That Doubles as a Space to Craft With Friends

My Blue Bike assembled two glass-top IKEA tables to make one gigantic craft table! A big table top like this is perfect for:

  • Sewing projects. This table gives you a sizeable solid space to spread out fabric and patterns to cut them out with precision. ✂️
  • Crafting with friends. This extra large table top is two glass IKEA tabletops, with added legs, pushed together to form one large table, hosting up to 4 friends for a craft night.
Glasholm Oddvald glass top ikea table for craft rooms

While you can't get these exact glass tables at IKEA any more, you can get these right now:

💡Use a gateleg table instead of two large tables to get the tabletop space you need and room to move around when the tables are folded down.

For additional storage, get IKEA cabinets with glass doors like any of these:

  • BRIMNES glass door cabinet
  • BRUSALI high cabinet with doors
  • HINDO shelf unit with cabinets
  • HEMNES glass door cabinet with drawers

The units in the video look like they are from the HEMNES line of storage from IKEA.

6. Best Die Cut Center

I recommend keeping the tools you want to use most out in the open on a tabletop or bar top. Here's why:

  • You don't have to put the tools away when you're done using them
  • Easy to access your tools
  • Keep them front of mind so you remember to use them

Scrapology has set up a die-cutting station in the center of her room on top of two IKEA Alex drawer units back to back.

If you want a more cohesive look, add a tabletop to cover the gap between the Alex drawers.

You can also customize the look of the Alex drawers by adding a removable fabric decal from My Wonderful Walls, cut to fit your IKEA Alex unit perfectly. 💖

My friends at My Wonderful Walls give you 10% off with my code “SMART” at checkout. Get designs like these:

Add a few trays to the top of the Alex drawer units to hold small bits or projects you are currently working on.

Pick up these items at IKEA to create this die-cut center in your space:

  • 2 ALEX drawer units on casters
  • SMULA tray

7. Best Home Craft Space

If you don't have the luxury of a dedicated room for crafts, consider using a wall in your dining room or family room like Darlene did.

In this video, craft room owner Darlene describes how she sits in these IKEA Poang chairs and enjoys her lunch in this multi-functional craft space.

The IKEA Billy bookcases give lots of storage and display space. 🤩

  • Billy bookcases are available in white, birch, this dark wood finish, and more, so you can choose the finish that best matches your home
  • Add these doors to the Billy bookcase system to keep dust and kids away from your supplies

Darlene also has an IKEA ALEX drawer unit on casters that she can move throughout her space to where she needs it. You can also remove the casters from the ALEX unit to stack them or place them under a table.

8. Best Sewing Room and Scrapbook Room Combo

Let's be honest; we all do more than one type of craft, don't we?

This craft room doubles as a serious sewing room! Even if you don't sew, this room has excellent ideas for using your space for more than one craft.

The foundation of Hooked on Applique's space is the ALEX line of drawers from IKEA. Here's what's in her space:

Sewing station 1 (sewing machine):

  • ALEX drawer unit on casters
  • LINNMON table
  • ADILS legs

Sewing station 2 (embroidery machine and laptop):

  • 2 ALEX drawer units
  • LINNMON table top

By having the sewing machines out and ready on the tables at all times, she can get to sewing right away.

She's also added two ALEX drawer units with nine drawers for additional storage. Customize the look of all three styles of ALEX drawers with removable fabric decals from My Wonderful Walls. Get 10% off with my code “SMART” at checkout!

9. Best Stamp and Paint Storage Ideas

The easiest way to use your stamps and paints is to have them in the open, where you can see them. One of my favorite IKEA hacks uses frame shelves to organize craft supplies in rainbow colors!

Paint and stamps stored on IKEA Mosslanda frame shelves

This room happens to be an older version of my craft room! 😉

I arranged my paint bottles and rubber stamps on thin IKEA shelves for picture frames, called picture ledges, mounted on the walls of my craft space. These shelves are just deep enough for:

  • Stamp blocks
  • Bottles of craft paint
  • Spray paint cans
  • Rolls of ribbon
  • Any other small items you want to arrange by type or color
Paint and stamps stored on IKEA Mosslanda frame shelves

The shallow shelves make it easy to see what you have and select what you need for a project. I put the most used items on the bottom to grab them quickly.

Less frequently used items are on the top shelves. I can still see them, so I won't forget about them, but I need a step stool to reach them one to two times a year if I want to use them.

You can find similar shallow frame shelves online here.

10. DIY Craft Armoire

Town and Country Living shares how to turn an IKEA computer cabinet into a shabby chic crafting heaven. 😍 Repurpose IKEA furniture meant for the closet, living room, and other home areas as craft supply storage.

Pine wood computer desk repurposed into a craft armoire
  • Use the keyboard tray as a slide-out work surface
  • Add shelves inside for more storage
  • Use bins and boxes in the bottom section for storing larger items
  • Close the doors when you're not working to hide the mess inside

Score marked-down, slightly damaged pieces already assembled in the IKEA As-Is Section.  The inside of this armoire is covered with paper that the owner decoupaged onto the wood. ✂️ Cover the scuffs with some pretty paper and decoupage medium, like Mod Podge.

As of January 2019, IKEA doesn't have an armoire like this in their catalog or online. But I gathered some similar ideas for you here:

  • PAX wardrobe system
  • MICKE corner workstation
  • VITTSJO shelving unit with laptop table
  • HEMNES desk with an add-on unit

DIY Inspired's Craft Room is so IKEA-licious that they should feature her space in their catalog!

11. Ultimate Ikea Craft Room with Lots of Craft Storage

The focal point of her space is the large cube bookcase against the back wall of the room. The IKEA Expedit Unit she used is no longer available. A few years ago, IKEA released a new version of this shelving series called KALLAX, with all new accessories and colors. 🤩

a desk and shelves in a craft room

Current Cube Shelf KALLAX Unit Configurations Available at IKEA:

  • KALLAX workstation
  • KALLAX 2×2
  • KALLAX 1×4
  • KALLAX 2×4
  • KALLAX 3×4
  • KALLAX 4×4
  • KALLAX 5×5

💡You can create a similar work desk to Dinah's by putting a LINNMON tabletop on two KALLAX 2×2 shelf units.

KALLAX Unit Accessories:

Dinah customized the doors of her EXPEDIT by decoupaging maps onto the door fronts.

Like the EXPEDIT line, you can purchase doors, dividers, and other items to customize your KALLAX shelves. Here are the current KALLAX accessories as of 2025:

  • KALLAX insert with 2 drawers
  • KALLAX shelf divider
  • KALLAX wire basket
  • KALLAX storage with compartments
  • KALLAX rail with casters
  • KALLAX hanging organizer
  • KALLAX insert with door
  • KALLAX glass top

12. DIY IKEA Craft Table Using Kallax Cubes

Are you looking for a rolling table that also has storage? Made By Charl Studio created this IKEA Kallax Cube crafting table on casters with a stick-on fake vinyl wooden top. Here's how:

What I love most about her video is her authenticity in sharing what went wrong and how she fixed the problems.

😎 Kirsty Griffiths shares another IKEA KALLAX Shelf Hack that without wheels if you're looking for a stationary craft table.

13. Wall Storage – the Craft Room With the Best Use of Wall Space

Create massive storage in a small craft space by using the walls like Rosehips and Petticoats did in her craft space.

The BEST ideas for IKEA furniture and storage for CRAFT ROOMS! See a bunch of videos for Ikea Craft Rooms and there's even a photo series of a craft room from an IKEA store show room. LOVE THESE IDEAS! #ikeacraftrooms #craftroom #craftrooms #ebook #crafting #craftspace #craftsposure

Here's how to make the most of wall space above a desk:

  • Add shelves up high with boxes for additional storage and framed prints for inspiration
  • Added a rail with cups for tools and pens
  • Add a wire with clips on it to hang inspiration and photos.
  • Used metal strips with lidded magnetic cups on them to store small items vertically
  • Add spice racks in white to hold rolls of ribbon and jars of embellishments and buttons

The shelves and storage look cohesive and melt into the wall because they're all white. 😍

Many items used for this craft room wall are no longer available. I tracked down similar items in the current IKEA catalog and online to help you achieve a similar wall storage solution:

  • 2 ALEX drawer units – these support the tabletop. Customize them from basic white in 10 minutes with this! (use code SMART for 10% off)
  • 1 LINNMON white tabletop – lay this tabletop across the two ALEX drawer units to form the desk
  • 4 BEKVAM spice racks, painted white – these hold jars, books, and so on against the wall
  • 18 RAJTAN spice jars – these jars fit on the BEKVAM shelves and can used to store buttons and small embellishments
  • 3 SUNNERSTA canisters – these plastic cups hang from the FINTORP rod and can be used to store tools like markers, paintbrushes, and scissors
  • FINTORP rod – hang this rod on the wall to hang storage containers from
  • ALGOT shelving system – add shelving and pegboard to the wall using the adjustable ALGOT storage system of rails, baskets, and shelving

In a space like this, minimizing clutter and ensuring that everything has a place is essential. Yana explained that she made her storage pretty so that she could continue to be inspired as she looked up from her work table.

15. Best Pegboard Wall with IKEA SKÅDIS

SeaLemon is one of the top DIY YouTubers, popular for her clean, colorful style. She recently redid her creative space to include a pegboard wall with the unique IKEA SKÅDIS wall organizing system.

Here's what makes SKÅDIS a great pegboard alternative for craft rooms:

  • You can paint it any color just like a pegboard 🎨
  • The slot design looks modern and updated
  • Use hooks to hold tools
  • Use cups and trays to hold smaller items
  • Use the letter holder to hold notepads, paper, and paper trimmers

16. Best Drawer Storage – Craft Room in a Real IKEA Showroom

IKEA knows that crafters are shopping in their stores for craft organizing ideas. 😍 My local store created this IKEA craft room display in their showroom!

They even stage them with actual craft supplies so we can see how IKEA products will work with real craft supplies. If you have the space for built-ins, you'll love this IKEA craft room featuring IKEA cabinetry!

This butcher block counter on adjustable metal table legs is perfect for die-cutting and stamping.

How Do You Organize Small Craft Items?

Small craft supplies can be challenging to organize. 😫

I love the shallow drawers of IKEA's Alex units for small supplies because you can add small trays to the drawers so your supplies are corraled and visible easily.

The drawers in this IKEA showroom display have dividers, making them incredibly functional for small supplies and tools.

  1. Oooh, now I miss my old craft studio! Our last home had an entirely separate 600 sq ft studio with a kitchen and sauna/bathroom/shower; I could live out there and I had great space for all my crafty stuff. Now it shares an office with my social media biz desk and treadmill. So many cool ideas in the photos above!

  2. Thank you for the awesome post! I’ve been on the hunt for craft room inspiration for our new house and this is perfect!

  5. Great post , I have my cart downstairs and keep a few basics to keep a a basics kit from running up and down the stairs to my (WAREHOUSE) scraproom, it is finally clean until the next time I need something… Ikea staples have been moved all over my house from my closed store — best was the the little desk that attaches to the expedit, it was damaged so they sent me a new one, so of course I repurposed it by adding legs and a middle brace to make one long desk table…. I am still watching the craft world so hard to step away, but I may have been cured …..

  10. Thanks for sharing so many inspiring ideas! We’re downsizing so I’m going to have to figure out which supplies get to come with and how the heck I’m going to organize it all.

  11. Honestly I don’t think I have a solution, my craft room is small. I have stuff for almost every craft that can be done. Wrapping paper, wall paper stored in a bucket, a bookcase with books about sewing, self improvement, cooking, helpful hints, declutering. History etc. I have nice porcelain dolls, old radios, a serger, a sewing machine. ribbons, fabric, lot of beads for making jewelry, ironing board, sewing notions, how do I arrange all this in a small room.

    1. Pull everything out of the room and choose only the stuff you love the most and that is useful. You might need to store stuff outside of the room or get rid of some things. If the room has too much stuff, you can’t create anything in the room.

  12. this is what I’m going to do in my scrapbooking room!.. I love this the wall is beautiful…one of my favorite things is the cups….I hope I can still find them

    1. I’m still trying to figure out how u hung them! I’m going to ikea this week.. ivsure hope I can find the same ones and the spice racks

  14. Hi Jennifer I am looking for suggestions on my project. I am building a 10x12x17 craft shed. One 12′ wall will have a 9′ glass slider the other 12 walk will have a 55×30 window. I design jewelry with TONS of beads. I make my own holders using lots of paper and stamps. Known to sew a little and have an addiction to pens. I’m starting with a blank canvas would love suggestions.

  15. love all of these ideas! saddly, i saw this too late and didn’t get the mail with the ikea furniture. i wanted to ask:
which size of LINNMON desk is it?
and whether you bought the desk and the drawers as a set or separately?
    thank you! 🙂

    1. Hello, I did not buy that Ikea desk and drawers 🙂 You can get the guide by using the signup link in the blog post. It will be emailed to you 🙂

  16. I would love to know the name of the drawers. I have been searching Ikea’s website for the piece and cannot find it.

  17. What is the lower unit that has the baskets in it. You mentioned you ordered the baskets online but didn’t say where you got the unit. Is it from IKEA as well? And what are the measurements?

    1. Hello, We share the product info in the guide you can get from our email 🙂 Please sign up to get the guide! Measurements can be found on the websites for each product – you can click the links in the guide to see them.

  18. Looking at the photo of the Linnmon / Alex desk. Can you tell me if a 12×12 sheet of paper fit laying flat in the drawers? Ordering online and called to ask but they couldn’t tell me for sure.

    1. Hello, I don’t have that desk. Check the site to see if they list the inner dimensions of the drawers? The wood is about 1/2″ thick.

  19. I have been struggling with depression for many years. I have a craft room but being in a separate room makes me feel isolated and lonely. Despite my best efforts I always end up doing crafts while I sit in my living room watching tv. This has obviously greatly limited the crafts I can do and I always end up surrounded by stacks that are tipping over and makeshift storage. (I would send a pic if I knew how). Eventually I will overcome the issues that keep me from using my room, but I wonder if you have any advice for the meantime.

    1. I hear you on feeling lonely – I do most of my crafts in front of the TV too 😉 I think one thing to do is one project at a time. It’s more work to get up and grab things and bring them back and forth but that will keep that TV watching area tidier. Can you put a TV in your craft room to watch? or a tablet? I’d like to invite you to join our Facebook group for organizing. There are lots of people in there with great advice to help … and you can share photos there too! I hope you’ll join us. 20. Augh… I JUST bought a desk almost exactly like this from Ikea. But the top is a shorter version of the Linnamon and I would’ve preferred two Alex units. I didn’t realize I could do this configuration. Back to Ikea I go, I guess.

  21. Hi!

What is the name of the chairs and the glass table. I am thinking they may not make them any longer. Also did the glass hold up well? I do scrapbooking so thought cleaning paint would be easier. Thank you!

    1. Hello,

in the guide I name the table and chairs – you gotta sub to get the resource guide 🙂

Yes, paint would come off glass easily with glass cleaner or a razor blade.

  22. Can you tell me how long it takes to get the guide? I really want to purchase the desk + drawer combination shown.

    Thank you!!

  23. I tried to used the Ikea Room Planner but it wouldn’t take my dimensions. Can you tell me exactly what you used to plan your room or possibly give me a link. I would really appreciate it!

    Thanks!

    1. I did not use the IKEA room planner for my room but I did use it to create the mockup I shared here. Contact their site for help if you can’t get the tool to work – it could be a glitch.

  24. Can I not receive the shopping list bc this post is old? I’ve tried twice and have still not received it. I keep checking both my inbox and my junk folders.

  25. I just spent several hours over the course of several days choosing the perfect items for my craft room, only to find that almost none of it is in stock in any store within 6 hours of me! And there are even fewer items available for delivery. Basically, I was just choosing Kallax shelves and Alex drawers. Any ideas?

    1. IKEA has been hit hard with all the people buying cheap furniture for the kids to learn at home – you’ll just have ot keep trying or look for alternatives on Amazon, which I have linked in the post.
