Why is IKEA the #1 craft storage source for crafters?
Search for any craft room online and you’re likely to see at least one IKEA product in the photos … And with good reason!
IKEA is a great place to get storage solutions for craft supplies and furniture for your craft room. Here's why:
IKEA's storage solutions are:
- Affordable. You save money by assembling things yourself. The prices go down over time, as the cost of design and development is reduced the longer an item is selling in IKEA stores.
- Minimalist. Most items are made to stack and have the minimalist Scandinavian design IKEA is known for.
Easy to use! Many solutions are ready go, right out of the store.
- Sleek Design. The Scandinavian design of most IKEA furniture and storage solutions blends with almost every decor style, from modern to farmhouse.
- Easy to clean. IKEA furniture and storage products are easy to clean and care for.
- Customizable. You can mix and match table legs, add a motor to create an adjustable table, swap out baskets for bins in the bookcases … IKEA storage solutions are customizable with many options to fit your exact needs.
Over the years, like many crafters, I have used IKEA as a go-to place to get storage solutions for my craft room. Every time I redesign my craft room space, IKEA is the first stop on my list!
The last time I updated my craft room, I got both my new desks at IKEA. And my entire “paint wall” was created with IKEA shelving … but I’ll get to showing you that more later *wink wink* …
Craft Organizing Ideas in Ikea Showrooms
Over the years I have used Ikea as a go-to place to get storage solutions for my craft room. The photo above is of a craft room display in an actual Ikea!
The Ikea showrooms really inspire with all their creative storage solutions. I'll be sharing more about this real Ikea craft room from the Ikea showroom on the last page of this tour.
Even if you don't love IKEA you can be inspired by these ideas to find storage solutions that work for your space.
What if I don't have an IKEA store near me?
You can order online from IKEA's website if you don't live local to an IKEA store: Order online at IKEA.com. Plus, IKEA stores offer delivery options based on the distance from the closest IKEA retail store to your address.
But did you know that you can also order IKEA products from Amazon?! Yes, you can! Many of the links I share here are to Amazon because you can get free shipping on many Amazon items if you are a member of Amazon Prime. Try Prime Discounted Monthly Offering
Here are some other places where you can find IKEA furniture in your local area:
- CraigsList – or you can sell your used IKEA furniture there but beware, the value goes down as IKEA lowers their prices
- Facebook Marketplace – look for local people in your area selling their used IKEA furniture
- Habitat for Humanity ReStore
- Local thrift shops
- Garage sales and yard sales. I sold one of my Expedit bookcases to a lady who drive an hour to my house to get it … she lives 3 hours from IKEA.

Are you ready to go on a tour of some of the best IKEA craft rooms on YouTube? And see all of the BEST IKEA organizing ideas for craft spaces?
1. BEST Craft Room for Crafting With Friends
If you have ever wished you could craft with your friends, you've gonna love these craft rooms! Back in the day when we had local scrapbook stores, I remember gathering there every Friday night and sometimes on weekends for craft nights. And when I was a kid, I remember my grandma heading to the sewing machine store to take classes and meet other avid sewing fans. But now that many of the local craft and scrapbook stores have closed, there's no place to gather and craft together.
Unless you build a craft room for crafting with friends in your house! And with affordable IKEA tables, it's super easy to build a craft room that has space for friends.
How to make a giant cutting table with IKEA tables … that doubles as a space to craft with friends
My Blue Bike put together two glass top IKEA tables to make one gigantic craft table! A big table top like this is perfect for sewing projects since it gives you a large solid space to spread out fabric and patterns to cut them out with precision.
Did you notice the second chair in this video tour of this IKEA craft studio? This giant craft table is perfect for crafting with friends!
If you love sewing and need a big cutting table or like to craft with friends, this large table in the middle of My Blue Bike's room is perfect! The table top is two glass Ikea tabletops, with added legs, pushed together to form one large table. This is perfect for cutting large pieces of fabric or working on large projects but you can also host a friend over for crafting. Notice how she has a craft mat at each table, as if it is already set up and ready for fun with friends!
The open glass shelves of the armoire are perfect for seeing all of the boxes and display items, making that armoire a pretty focal point in the room as well as functional as storage. My Blue Bike 101's Room
2. BEST Die Cut Center
The best way to make your tools easy to use is to store them on table tops or out in the open. Scrapology has set up stations for her various tools and activities, using Ikea furniture pieces as the base. She used IKEA Alex drawer units back to back to create a die cut center where she can easily cut paper with the trimmer and then use either of her die cut machies to cut the paper, all in one place. Super smart idea! Scrapology's room
3. BEST Home Craft Space
This big open space with the dark wood accents feels like a living room, a part of the home. In this video, craft room owner Darlene describes how she sits in these Ikea Poang chairs and enjoys her lunch in this gorgeous space. At IKEA, you can often choose several different wood finishes for pieces to match your taste. The focal point of this room are the shelving units, which look to be from IKEA's Billy bookcase line, available in white, birch, this dark wood finish, and more. Darlene also has an Ikea ALEX chest of drawers on wheels as a rolling cart she can move throughout her space. A rolling cart is a great way to add more storage without it being in the way, especially when you don't have enough wall space for more shelves. Darlene's room
4. BEST Sewing Room and Scrapbook Room Combo
What if you use your craft room for more than one craft? If you’ve been crafting for more than a couple of years, then you probably make more than one type of craft.
Hooked on Applique has alot of great Ikea storage from the ALEX line of drawers in her sewing room. The two sewing stations were created with tabletops from Ikea – you can buy the tabletops, legs, and accessories all a la carte to create custom pieces to fit your specific needs. By having the sewing machines out and ready on the tables at all times, she can get to sewing right away.
5. BEST Stamp and Paint Storage Ideas
The easiest way to use your stamps and paints is to have them out in the open, where you can see them. This room happens to be my craft room! These thin IKEA shelves for picture frames, called picture ledges, are mounted on the wall above the die cutting station, with stamps and paints store on the shelves. These shelves are just deep enough for 2-3 stamp blocks or bottles of paint, making it easy to see what you have and then select what you need for the project. Check out some of the ways I have used IKEA to organize my craft room here:
6. BEST Mobile Storage
These Raskog carts are HOT in the craft world. Originally for the kitchen, they work great for craft supplies.
This cart is a great solution if you have limited space or don't have a craft room at all. Store the supplies in this cart, store it in the closet or in a corner, and roll it out when you are ready to craft.
7. Computer Cabinet to Craft Cabinet – BEST Repurpose
Town and Country Living shares how to turn an Ikea computer cabinet into a shabby chic crafting heaven! Reimagine pieces from the closet, living room, and other areas of IKEA as storage solutions for your craft space.
The best place to find IKEA deals
The as-is section in Ikea is also a great place to score marked down, slightly damaged pieces that are already assembled. If you plan to alter the piece, like this piece was altered with decoupaged paper, then who cares if it is damaged!
8. Ultimate Ikea Craft Room – BEST Clean Design
DIY Inspired's Craft Room is so Ikea-licious, they should be featuring her space in their catalog! She has customized some of the doors and boxes with decoupaged maps and decorative knobs on the IKEA Expedit Unit that holds most of her supplies but most of the pieces in the room are unaltered. Check out the plethora of Ikea based ideas for your craft space in her room tour here: DIY Inspired's Room Tour
9. Wall Storage – the Craft Room with the BEST Use of Wall Space
This craft space is small, nestled against the wall in one corner of the room, but it still packs a lot of punch.
Here's how they made the most of the wall space above the desk:
- Added shelves up high with boxes for additional storage and framed prints for inspiration
- Added a rail with cups for tools and pens
- Add a wire with clips on it to hang inspiration and photos.
- Used metal strips with lidded magnetic cups on them to store small items vertically
- Add spice racks in white to hold rolls of ribbon and jars of embellishments and buttons
There's A LOT going on in this one small space but it looks cohesive and orderly due to the all white elements from IKEA.
10. BEST Drawer Storage – Craft Room in a Real IKEA Show Room
Ikea knows that we love going there to get craft room storage solutions. That's why many Ikea showrooms now share actual craft rooms or craft solutions!! They even stage them with real craft supplies! Ikea craft rooms for the win!
The star of this Ikea Craft Room is the drawers!
These cute jars of paint and wire thing that are held in are minimalist and pretty to look at.
This butcher block counter on adjustable metal table legs and the shelving unit are so smart!! I love the warmth of it and the surface will be nice and steady for die cutting and stamping. The drawers have these awesome dividers in them making them incredibly functional:
