CardMaker Magazine and Sizzix Blog Hop – Happy Birthday Card with Felt

(Disclosure: this post contains affiliate links from which I make a few pennies if you make a purchase from the linked sites.)

Sizzix and CardMaker Magazine have teamed up all this week for a fun blog hop with card ideas featuring Stephanie Barnard's line of Sizzix dies. Stephanie is known for her cute whimiscal images and these die sets did not disappoint. I decided to make a cute an happy card using a mix of papers and fabric for a unique tactile experience. Mixing up fabric and paper is a fun way to make a child's card more interactive, as they can touch the different materials on the card and explore the differences between them. Here's the card I created:

Create a 3D Popup birthday card using Sizzix Framelits and felt fabric - Jennifer Priest shares a video on how to do it. Check it out!

You might think that these wafer thin dies can't cut fabric but they totally can! The trick is adding shims as well as running the die through the machine twice. I decided to see if the die would cut through craft felt, the kind you can get in 9×12 sheets at the craft store. It totally did! To cut through felt with these wafer thing dies, fold TWO sheets of 8.5 x 11 copy paper in half to act as a shim. You'll need to experiment a little to check that the dies are cutting all the way through the felt. Try adding an additional paper shim if needed. Also, you can cut away small attached areas with a pair of scissors if needed.

Check out this handy dandy video showing how to create this card from start to finish, including tips on cutting multiple small dies at once:

The felt I used is from Kunin Group – it is made form recycled plastic bottles and can be found in most craft stores in 9×12 sheets. You can make a lot of little suns and clouds with one 9×12 sheet of felt!

My niece's birthday is coming up and I just know she will love this fun card.

HERE ARE SOME OF THE SUPPLIES YOU’LL NEED TO DO MAKE A FELT POP-UP BIRTHDAY CARD:

  • Sizzix Big Shot Machine
  • Tombow Mono Aqua Liquid Glue
  • Sizzix Triplits Die Set- Kites & Sail Boat
  • Sizzix Framelits Die Set 19PK – Card, Happy Birthday Step-Ups
  • Sew Easy Industries 12-Sheet Velvet Paper
  • Kunin Classic Rainbow Eco-Fi Felt

If you love making cards, there's a blog hop for that! Sizzix & CardMaker Magazine have combined forces to bring you a flurry of card projects, ideas and inspiration featuring cardmaking dies by Stephanie Barnard.

I love step cards. I have used felt a few times for my cards but need to get it out more.
Sometimes it’s hard to get the dies to cut thru it so there is a little fussy cutting – but it’s worth it.
thanks for sharing a summery card.
