DIY Cape Cod Summer Decor for the Backyard

No matter where you live, you can create an escape in your own backyard! With a little craft paint, you can create any decor you like. We received the NEW *luxurious* Waverly Chalk Paint by PLAID and these really cool wood cut shapes. The shapes have a monogram in the center without last initial. As soon as Katie and I opened the package, we knew we were going to make Cape Cod inspired patio decor for our backyard, Sure, we live int he desert but one can dream!

Katie and I each decorated our wood shapes from Unfinished Wood Co. using PLAID's new Waverly Chalk Paint but we each used different techniques. We're sharing our video tutorials on YouTube today as part of a collaboration with other YouTubers, all about Summer Fun! Click below to watch the videos:

Now, are you ready to make these fun Cape Cod patio decor pieces? I worked with the anchor shape, painting distressed strips onto it and apply a creme wax finish.

Here's what you'll need to get started:

  • PLAID Waverly Chalk Paint
  • PLAID Waverly Chalk Paint Brushes
  • PLAID Waverly Wax Finish
  • Masking Tape
  • Measuring Tape
  • Pencil
  • Wood Monogram Anchor
  • Plastic Gloves
  • Plastic Table Cover

If you plan to leave these outdoors for an extended period of time, I recommend using a varnish instead of the wax sealant. The wx will need to be reapplied every 6 months in order to keep the finish looking good.

Watch the video below to see how to paint an unfinished wood shape with a distressed finish:

And be sure to catch Katie's tutorial on how to paint this fun crab accent piece:

What decor would you love to have in your backyard? I kind of want a Bahamas backyard too… well, maybe next year!
